William Blake famously said: "a good local pub has much in common with a church, except that a pub is warmer, and there’s more conversation". The inn and the alehouse have been part of the English tradition for centuries, and although Blake wasn’t keen on organised religion, it’s clear he enjoyed a visit to a public house.
Barry Brock's talk will investigate the history of the inn and the alehouse in Sherborne, and the part played by the common brewer. It will provide an insight into the means and methods used to research the history of these institutions, and take a look at some of the people involved and the tales associated with them.
SDFHS Members: £3. Non-members: £5. Includes refreshments.
Venue: The Raleigh Hall, Digby Rd, Sherborne DT9 3NL.
